Play-Based Physical Therapy: What is it?
Our staff knows that children gain physical skills naturally through play. When a child's functioning is limited in some way, our physical therapists use child-centered games, activities, and toys to help with his or her development. To encourage a child to crawl, we may creep together on our hands and knees toward toys spaced throughout a tunnel; or to help children improve their balance, we may have them balance on one foot while using the other to step on an air-filled pad that launches a foam rocket into the air! We have climbing mats, balls, customized obstacle courses, andfor more challenging or uncomfortable activitieswe may use music, imagery, or a child's favorite superhero.
"I am constantly amazed at how spontaneous, curious, amusing, and resilient children can be. If we can set the stage properly for them, nine times out of ten, they do exactly what they need to do to advance their own development." Melissa Parmley Smith
